Council votes down budget-cap ordinance

NJ JACKSON — Jackson Township Council rejects budget-cap ordinance, blocking 2026 budget adoption. Council President Mordechai Burnstein and Council Vice President Giuseppe Palmeri voted to approve the measure, which would have allowed a 3.5 percent increase in appropriations; Councilmen Nino Borrelli and Christopher Pollak opposed it on fiscal responsibility grounds. The ordinance was needed to adopt the $62.85 million 2026 budget, which carries a 0 percent municipal tax rate increase but projects a $1.53 annual increase for the average homeowner due to property value growth.
Township Attorney Gregory McGuckin warned that failure to pass the ordinance could eventually impact the Township's ability to pay bills. Council members indicated they would meet with administration prior to attempting budget adoption again.
